Julia Potter

With no formal training, I began painting in my 40s, beginning with ladylike watercolours (and being a winner on 'Watercolour Challenge'). In my paintings there are elements of abstraction, surrealism and expressionism. I paint figures, land and seascapes and scenes of urban decay en plein air. Drawing on my experience and observations, I often comment obliquely or directly on current issues. Any location with the right stimulus is home to me since I no longer paint to a formula. I paint instinctively and quickly and delight in exploring colour and the potential of different media.
